Alexandre, no, I do not agree.
There was always leadership with and without authority, at least since we invented matrix management.
I attended a class ?leading without authority’ 30 years ago.
Think it is much more difficult to lead with authority as there is a risk to be lazy and rely on power.

I'd agree with Thomas that the concept of leading without authority has been around for centuries, but it has been promoted and written about much more in the last few decades as we moved away from rote work to knowledge work.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts. It's true that the concept is much more on the table in the last year's, curiously some times discussed by organizations like the army, that normally are very conservative on these matters.
I agree with Kiron
The funny thing is that the armed forces in most countries are a great example of diffused leadership. Yes, strategy and objectives are pushed from above and there is a strict set of standards which staff are expected to follow, but they are also given a significant degree of autonomy and some of the best special forces squads operate almost as holocracies.

It is a challenge to be able to lead others with authority (that is, without the power that is given to us by the hierarchical position)
